Rankin Chapel and Reaching Out Ministry
Circa 2008
Rankin Chapel [Howard University] listeners would have heard me in antique pews and their Sunday best. Reaching Out [Second Baptist Church of Detroit] listeners share in prayer, praise and proclamation from aluminum chairs, donning clothing closet acquisitions.
Rankin sermons may have been delivered while wearing a cleric's robe or tailored suit. Reaching Out sermonettes have been delivered in corduroy trousers and wool sweaters.
My voice at Rankin may have echoed behind stained glass and under soaring rafters. My voice at Second has been echoing off of painted cinder blocks and under a drop ceiling. While the surroundings may not seem as glorious, the Word of God is just as salubrious.
Reaching Out Ministry opens its doors every Tuesday evening between 6-7 pm in the fellowship hall of Second Baptist Church of Detroit. Founded during the 18th pastoral anniversary of Rev. Dr. Kevin M. Turman, t he ministry was led initially by Sister Evelynn Marks and Brother Carl Smalls. As I pen these words, Brother Dwayne Phelps is leading the effort to reach whosoever will come.
