Lectio Divina: 25Mar10

Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good. ~ Ps 127: 1(b)

Lectio divina consideration of Psalm 127 has moved from the inside out.  I began reading for myself and am now reading for myself and those I lead.

The Lord builds a house first.  Our building then will not be in vain.  The Lord protects a city first.  Our efforts to protect a city will succeed if God protects before we guard.  The Lord is building our family's home; we are then able to have our work be meaningful.  Our home is a part of the larger city.  We need the city protected for our home to be protected.  A city is too large for just me.  Verse 1 says "sentries".  If the Lord protects a city, by association our house is protected.  The sentries are probably more interested in they're home owners, home builders.

A church is a house that God builds.  People work in vain if God hasn't worked first.  A city is a catchment area for / a mission field for a house of God.  If the mission field (city) is the preoccupation of the church (builders), the house is protected because the city is protected.
