Lectio Divina, Ps 127: God loves builders, not buildings

06Oct09 @ 06:39

Unless the Lord builds the house, the work of the builders is useless. (Ps. 127)

The Lord is preoccupied / passionate about the builders not the building. The Lord is focused on the sentries, not only the city they are protecting. The house and the city are for human use.

The whole biblical narrative, in my reading, is about reconciliation between God and people. God's agency points to people.

Therefore if God is building a house, it is so that people can become successful builders. If God is protecting the city, it is so that people can become effective sentries. If God has not acted, there can be no success nor effectiveness.

How do we know if the Lord is building a house for protecting the city? If we are not successful, does that mean the Lord is not building? If we aren't effective, does that mean the Lord is protecting?

  1. Since ALL things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose I believe that includes unsuccessful undertakings. In other words sometimes we need to fail and God uses those failures to help us build our houses/businesses but more draw us closer to Him.

    1. The Gardens (Eden and Gethsemane) were failures used to draw us closer to Him.
